When to Capitalize

May 14, 2008

From the WCU Style Guide from the Web:

  • Upper case is used only when the title is directly before the name: Associate Vice President John Jones, but John Jones, associate vice president of planning.
  • Upper-case all titles when used in an address or headline
  • Generally, lower-case references to proper names when not used in full: the program, the college, EXCEPT when referring to your particular institution: the College, the Foundation, etc.
  • Lower-case majors, minors, concentrations, and certificates: construction management major, motion picture studies concentration, travel agent certificate
  • Lower-case department names when referred to informally: music department
  • Capitalize keywords within quotation marks for course names: “Tobacco and Substance Use Among American Indian Populations”
